World AIDS Day - HIV/AIDS Compilation - AIDS and Masculinity - Scenarios USA Premiere

World AIDS Day - December 1, 2008
AIDS ribbon
December 1st 2008 marks the 20th anniversary of World AIDS Day . On this day, organizations from around the globe will convene to promote AIDS awareness, advocate testing, and take stock of how far we've come in battling the disease and how far we still must go.

Educators all over the world will be engaging their students in activities that get them thinking about AIDS awareness and acting to increase prevention. We are therefore honored to promote our most successful film compilation, in observance of World AIDS Day.

AIDS and Masculinity
masculinity&aids
Here at Scenarios USA, AIDS awareness and AIDS prevention has always been at the heart of our mission. Our strategy is to help teens think critically about the choices they make in their relationships by giving them the opportunity to reflect on who they are and on their attitudes, behaviors, and sexual health decision-making.

Gender issues have a profound effect on our identity and our intimate relationships. Research links attitudes around gender roles to real health outcomes, such as HIV and STD rates, sexual debut, condom use, unintended pregnancy and relationship violence. Boys are under pressure to be tough and brave, not to show feelings of vulnerability or fear, to have multiple partners (and to be heterosexual, not gay), and -- not infrequently -- to engage in violence and risk-taking. These negative stereotypes can impact young men's sense of self, harm their health and their partner's health, and have a negative impact on the way they behave in relationships.

We are very excited to add three new masculinity-related films to the Scenarios USA library (available in early 2009), and our Masculinity Curriculum scheduled for release in April 2009. The Scenarios USA program, including the films and the curriculum, gives young people opportunities to reflect on how gender functions in their own lives and to challenge the conventional definition of masculinity, in order for them to make healthier choices. If you have any questions, feel free to contact me by email: ernestine@scenariosusa.org.
