Curriculum Corner Vol. 9: End of school year edition

Greetings from Brooklyn!
Welcome to the final edition of the 2008-2009 academic year Scenarios USA Curriculum Corner.

You are receiving this newsletter as you have shown interest in Scenarios USA, our film program and curriculum materials. As you may know, our films are written by teens, for teens, on a wide variety of adolescent health topics. We partner our youth writers with Hollywood filmmakers to create award-winning short films that resonate with teen students across the country as hip, entertaining and culturally relevant.

"What's the REAL DEAL?" Film Program
Our "What's the REAL DEAL?" films stand out from the crowd because each film comes with a lesson plan, a Behind the Scenes documentary and the shooting script. Our interdisciplinary lesson plans provide educators with a proven tool to facilitate a conversation between students, helping them to think critically about the film and about their knowledge and attitudes.

Ric Loya, of the Los Angeles United School District HIV/AIDS Prevention Unit said this about our films:
"The strength of the Scenarios USA film programs is their relevance, because they were written by the students themselves. The quality of the content and the production are super and they engage the students immediately regardless of their culture, race or ethnicity."

Masculinity Curriculum
really 10%
Beth Reis of the Safe Schools Coalition had this to say about our "What's the REAL DEAL about Masculinity?" curriculum, a multi-disciplinary, multi-media, 9 lesson curriculum for classroom and community educators:
"I watched all three movies that comprise "What's the Real Deal About Masculinity?" and read the curriculum and I am blown away. It is outstanding- thought-provoking, challenging and important."

Scenarios USA at Provincetown Film Festival
Ptown film fest
Last year, Who I Am won the Audience Award at the Provincetown International Film Festival. This year the festival has invited the writers of Misunderstood and its director, Clark Johnson (The Wire) to participate in a Youth and Diversity Panel on June 20th. Our recent "What's the REAL DEAL?" films will also screen there. If you're there, come say hi!

Premiere and workshops
On Friday May 1st Scenarios USA and the Texas Education Agency's Region One partnered to host the regional premiere of Bitter Memories and MANchild. 500 people filled Cine El Rey in McAllen to honor Pharr's youth writer, Mariella Zavalla, and to participate in a panel of local experts addressing gender-based violence.

On Wednesday, May 6th, I gave a "What's the REAL DEAL about Masculinity?" workshop to Social Studies, English, Drama and Health Teachers in Edinburg, South TX, in anticipation of our "What's the REAL DEAL?" writing contest, which will start in September 2009. I was thrilled by the good turnout, as local school districts were closing down by the day due to the H1N1 flu. Thanks to everyone who turned up and participated!

Teacher training workshops in Greater Cleveland are set for September 15 and 16. Please email Steph Wahome, Cleveland Coordinator, for more details at steph@scenariosusa.org.
