Scenarios USA curriculum writing team in action
|
Last Wednesday, December 10th, Scenarios USA
hosted its 2008 Masculinity Curriculum
Writers Meeting, here in Brooklyn. We were
joined by Ms. Dequi Kioni-Sadiki
(NYC), Mr. Gilbert Zepeda (TX) and Mr. Rik
York (OH). These teachers' students won our
2007 "What's the REAL DEAL about
Masculinity?" writing contest and had their
films premiered that night. We were also
joined by our key
teacher, Ms. Michelle deFranco (NYC) and two
curriculum experts from George Washington
University: Professor Brian Casemore and Mr.
Jim Burns (DC).

We spent all afternoon brainstorming ideas
and improvements for Scenarios USA's first
national "What's the REAL DEAL about
Masculinity?" curriculum, to be launched in
April 2009. We watched the three new
masculinity movies and established
their main themes and teaching points.

|
|
|
The three new masculinity movies are
Bitter Memories,
Misunderstood and
MANchild. They all deal with
the pressures on young males as they
transition into manhood, such as the pressure
to provide and expectations from family and
peers. Bitter Memories deals
specifically with breaking the cycle of
domestic violence.
These films were a huge success at the
premiere and we know they will provide engage
students immediately with their authentic and
important stories. We're also excited to have
them as the core of our new curriculum!
