February 2010: A month of love
Objective: healthy, loving relationships

Bitter Memories boys sq
The first week of February is Teen Dating Violence Awareness week; and February 14th is V-Day, which is a global movement to stop violence against women and girls.

Check out the Scenarios USA film, Bitter Memories, directed by Joshua Marston (Maria Full of Grace) and written by 16-year old Mariella Zavala from Pharr, TX. In this film a young man grows up watching his father abuse his mother. When jealousy brings Rob face to face with his own violent tendencies toward women, he confronts his father's behavior so he can learn how to be "un hombre vero." National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day
February 7, 2010
Reflections

February 7th of every year is a national HIV testing and treatment community mobilization initiative targeted at Blacks in the United States and the Diaspora. There are four specific focal points: education, testing, involvement, and treatment.

An excellent resource for teaching about HIV/AIDS and prevention is the Scenarios USA HIV/AIDS film compilation that includes four films that examine teens' perspectives on HIV/AIDS. One of the films, Reflections, directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (Secret Life of Bees) and written by 17-year old Keyana Ray from Maywood, IL, won the Paul Robeson award at the Newark Black Film Festival and has moved people of all ages and races across the country.

The other films in the HIV/AIDS compilation are The Monster, directed by Academy Award winning director Adam Davidson (Big Love, Fringe, Community); Just Like You Imagined?, directed by David Frankel (Marley and Me); and Nightmare on AIDS Street, directed by Kinan Valdez (El Teatro Campesino).

Each film in the compilation comes with a lesson plan, a behind-the-scenes documentary and a PDF of the script. View films and purchase our films online here: http://scenariosusa.org/watchfilms/index.html.

Spotlight on... Healthy Teen Network
Pat Paluzzi, President and CEO
Pat Paluzzi

"HTN is a national membership organization that focuses on adolescent reproductive health issues, as well as teen pregnancy and parenting. We have a special interest in marginalized populations, such as youth in foster care and LGBTQ youth. Our four areas of expertise are training, technical support, resource development and advocacy.

At HTN we're excited about the Obama administration's decision to back science-based approaches to sexual health education. There is an initiative that has already passed through the House and the Senate that will convert funds previously allocated to abstinence-only programs to proven, comprehensive sex ed programs. We hope that the new Office of Adolescent Health will award these grants by Spring 2010.

As educators we need to recognize the importance of integrating the conversation about healthy sexual development into core curriculum subjects so that youth are informed and empowered to make choices that are right for them.  We need to have these conversations in our homes as well. All of us who work with youth should work together to normalize these conversations in developmentally appropriate ways.

Curriculum Corner readers can download our publication Opportunity Knocks, which is a one-page tool that helps people who are not trained in sex ed talk with teens about sexual health. We created this tool because sometimes we get nervous talking to teens about this topic and can shut them down, or because we're scared that by talking about sex, we're encouraging them to have sex. We will soon have a PowerPoint workshop guide available to accompany this resource.

Your readers might also be interested in our publication Boys Will Be Boys, which explores the relationship between masculinity, sexual and parenting behaviors, and violence.

- Thanks, Pat!
