National Domestic Violence Awareness Month
October 2009
As
President Obama said earlier this week in his proclamation, "Domestic
violence touches the lives of Americans of all ages, leaving a
devastating impact on women, men and children of every background and
circumstance... During this month, we dedicate ourselves to breaking
the cycle of violence."
We salute our youth writer, Mariella Zavala, for her film, Bitter Memories, about gender-based violence and directed by Joshua Marston (Maria Full of Grace). In her film we see Rob, a young man who grows up watching his father abuse his
mother. When jealousy brings Rob face to face with his own violent
tendencies toward women, he confronts his father's behavior so he can
learn how to be "un hombre vero."
Check out the film's lesson plan here and click here to purchase.
Read the President's Proclamation and find out how else you can take action.

What's the REAL DEAL? Writing Contest
Thank you to the 258 educators who came to our What's the REAL DEAL about Masculinity? workshops
in the Rio Grande Valley, TX: Cleveland, OH; and in NYC. We enjoyed
meeting you all and were impressed by your enthusiasm in
re-constructing your own definitions of masculinity. Good luck in the
coming months as your students reflect on and talk about What's the REAL DEAL about Masculinity? For more information on our curriculum, click here.

Spotlight on...
Mid-Hudson Library System
Scenarios
USA films are regularly reviewed by teens as part of the Mid-Hudson
Library System's Health Information Project, which provides free access
to consumer health and substance abuse prevention information to 70
public libraries in New York. We love the frank feedback we get from
their teens!
Who I Am:
"It caught my attention and was a very realistic situation. It had to
do with sexuality and clique issues, which is a problem teens face
every day."
The Choices We Make:
"The movie shows the harsh truth about not having safe sex. It was an
interesting and fast paced movie that all teens should see."
MANchild:
"The video had a really good sense of a kid's life in school,
especially when color defines a man. It wasn't cheesy and was
enjoyable, funny and good acting."
Check out all of our short films that were written by teens, for teens here. Check out the Mid-Hudson Library System here.
